Born and raised in West Africa, Selasee’s pursuit of music eventually led him to Boulder, Colorado, where he currently lives. Selasee’s music is a unique blend of Reggae, West African Highlife and American Pop music. Bright with color, his music threads together English and West African lyrics for a captivating sound.
As a young child in Accra, Ghana, Selasee realized his passion for music and understood at this early age how music can affect people. Selasee developed his musical talents through school and church. From his involvement with church music groups, Selasee formed a gospel group. Selasee recorded his first two albums with this group in 1997 and 1998. The successes of these two albums created the momentum for a third record, this time with Selasee’s African pop group, Makuma, in 1997.
Selasee continued to follow the music all the way to Boulder, where he began his solo career in 2003. During this time, Selasee also started working with Running Dreams Records with Sean Cassidy acting as his manager. In 2005, Selasee recorded his debut album as a solo artist, entitled “Run.”
His title track “Run” won first place in the World Music genre of the International Song Writers Competition in 2005. “Run” and another track “Makuma” were featured in the 2006 FIFA Soccer and 2007 Cricket video games by EA Sports. In 2006, Selasee performed at a showcase during MIDEM 2006 in Nice, France and MUSEXPO 2006 in Los Angeles, California.
Selasee has opened for reggae legends like Don Carlos, Barrington Levy and Steel Pulse, and keeps busy playing at local venues and festivals around Boulder and Denver where he can connect with people who love his music.
Recently, Selasee finished recording his latest album named “African Gate.” With 10 new tracks, ranging from complex and uplifting to sad and beautiful, this recording marks an evolution in Selasee’s sound. Selasee says of his new album, “I think this record has a lot of depth…true highs and lows that I hope people who listen will feel.”
